FENCE CORNWALL
In September 2007, Truro Fencing Club launched Fence Cornwall, a county-wide fencing development project with the aim of:
- delivering free taster sessions to as many Cornish schools as possible
- establishing new after-school clubs around the county
- forming partnerships with local sports development groups and initiatives
- creating a launch-pad for further development and expansion
The project has been an extraordinary success, making waves in the world of fencing and school sport throughout the UK.
Since its inception in September 2007, Fence Cornwall has:
- Delivered over 450 taster sessions free of charge to over 5000 children in Cornwall
- Started more than 30 fencing activity sessions, mostly in the form of after-school clubs, but also including a small number of curriculum time sessions
- Involved over 400 children in regular sports activity
- Obtained funding worth over £25,000 to deliver the initial development programme in local schools
- Been involved in Cornwall Healthy Schools Project, Shape-up Cornwall project, Devon & Cornwall Police Youth Activities, Cubs and Scouts groups, Territorial Army training and the development of mini-fence for 5-7 year olds
Fence Cornwall is considered a national pilot scheme by England Fencing for the delivery of fencing to the state school sector and as a result of Fence Cornwall's pioneering work, the Youth Sport Trust to include fencing as one of 16 core sports to be taught in state schools.
